| It was an evening when the members
of BIC, who had come to listen to two Cambridge Dons –
Prof. Philip Towle and Prof. James Mayall – speculating
on “World Order: Problems and Prospects for the
21st Century”, were at their incisive best. Prof.
Towle and Prof. Mayall emphasized that the emergence of
India and China in the wake of the end of the cold war
era, the pattern of use of non-renewable sources of energy,
global warming, militant nationalism, and terrorism would
be some of the major issues in the coming years. In their
interactions with the speakers, the BIC members pointed
out that systematic demonisation of Islam by the western
countries, led by USA, unresolved issues like Palestine,
and the unholy scramble for monopolization of scarce energy
resources by a few of the developed countries as other
potentially explosive issues which could rock the world
in the 21st Century. The lively exchanges also noted that
globalization might ultimately lead to a changing realignment
between countries who “have” and those who
“have not” which could transcend the traditional
national and physical boundaries. The immensely enjoyable
and thought-provoking interactive session on 30th September
was presided over by Mr. Xerxes Desai and followed by
an equally enjoyable contributory dinner. Prof. Towle
and Prof. Mayall, who had an identical interaction earlier
at Delhi, mentioned that they found the interaction at
Bangalore much more incisive and enjoyable. |
