GLOBAL CALL FOR DESIGN IDEAS
Bangalore International Centre (BIC) plans to move to its new premises on a half an acre property in Domlur, Bangalore. To get design ideas and help select an architect for the project, BIC ran a Global call for Design ideas contest. The contest was run online and went live third week of May 2012. The last date for submission was July 12, 2012.
The response was great both in terms of numbers and the quality of submissions. Some data about the registrants and applicants:

The jury’s observations about the winning entry by Hundred Hands – “We were impressed by the keen attention given to the scale and porosity in designing what is programmatically a difficult volume to place in a predominantly residential locale. The winning entry is remarkable in its simplicity; by employing two referential masses – one sunk and one floating, the monumental bulk of the building is rendered light and to a human scale. The smooth planes and gentle volumes are rich in the spatial possibilities they offer and yet appear at home amidst the surrounding low-rise fabric. Punctuated by public spaces and vegetation at significant levels and domains, the building is as much a result of the architect’s idea of the visitor’s perception as it is of the program itself. In doing so, the mission of the Bangalore International Centre in realizing sustainability, fostering intellectual activity, cultural enterprise and innovation is simultaneously achieved making it a clear winner”.
The other shortlisted entries (in numeric id order)
72, 73, 79, 221, 242, 285, 332, 410
Among the student entries, entry 289 was commended for the best effort by the jury
BIC would like to thank all participants for their enthusiasm in participating in this ideas contest. As we mentioned earlier, the quality of the submissions was high and judging the winners was a difficult, unenviable task. BIC will be in touch with select architects to finalise the architect for the project.
BIC has got about half an acre land in Domlur close to its current premises. A campus with state of art facilities for its members is being envisioned currently. An ideas contest from designers globally is planned as a precursor to finalising the lead architects.
The proposed centre is expected to have the following features:
