  Illustrated Talk on "The Mind of a Woman : Potrayal in Bollywood" by Dr. Dinesh Bhugra on Friday, 5th March, 2010 on the occasion of International Women's Day

In celebration of International Womens’ Day, Bangalore International Centre had arranged an Illustrated Talk on “The Mind of a Woman : Portrayal in Bollywood” on Friday, 5 th March, 2010 at 6 pm. Dr. Dinesh Bhugra, President of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, UK, delivered the talk with power point presentation and some old film clippings. Ms. Ammu Joseph chaired the session and moderated the discussion.

Covering a very wide canvas, Dr. Bhugra argued that the films to a very great extent reflect the political, social and economic realities, seen from the view-point of the film-makers, including producers, directors, actors and writers. The portrayal of women and their problems in Bollywood films has more or less conformed to this pattern. He classified the Bollywood films into three categories:
  • The Nehruvian age (1947-1964) wherein the approach was “Romantic”;
  • The Post-Nehruvian Period (1964-1980) when the emphasis was on “Villainy”; and
  • The later period (1981-2001) when both Romanticism and Villany acquired newer shades.
Dr. Bhugra emphasized that while social, economic and political transformations had their inevitable reflections in the stories, plots and sub-plots in the Bollywood films during these periods, the depiction and portrayal of women as chattels or weaklings or subservient to males continued to be the pattern. There were very few attempts to understand the minds of women in the Bollywood films.

The interactive session which followed, by and large, agreed with Dr. Bhugra.
