Interactive Session on “What Mao did in Power, and his Longer-term Legacy with some thoughts on his attitude towards India” on 7th January, 2008

It was an extremely interesting and informative evening when the members of BIC came to listen to Mr. Jon Halliday and Mrs. Jung Chang on “What Mao did in Power, and his Longer-term Legacy, with some Thoughts on his Attitude towards India”.

Mrs. Jung Chang, who spoke first, demolished several myths about the achievements of Mao and about the Mao himself. She spoke passionately about her own interface with the “Cultural Resolution” and the horrors associated with it. Mr. Halliday outlined he rationale behind several actions taken by China and by Mao, including the Sino-Indian War of 1962. He was clear that the war was intended to “teach India a lesson”.

The interaction which followed was lively and exciting.
