Talk on "Food Security- A Dilemma" by Dr. Prem Nath on Friday, 6th May, 2011 at 6.30 pm

Bangalore International Centre had arranged a Talk on “Food Security- A Dilemma” by Dr. Prem Nath, Chairman, Dr. P.N. Agricultural Science Foundation, Bangalore, on Friday, 6th May, 2011 at 6:30 pm. The talk was moderated by Dr. C.P.A. Iyer, Former Director, Central Institute of Tropical Horticulture, ICAR.

Dr. Nath, through PowerPoint presentation mentioned that Food security is not just a poverty issue but a much larger issue that affects every one of us in some way. He said that food security exists when all people at all times have access to sufficient, safe, nutritious food to maintain a healthy and active life. As per the figures provided by him, presently, one billion people suffer from hunger and malnutrition. According to WHO, an estimated 334 million children in developing countries are malnourished. In 2020, one out of every four children in developing countries will still be malnourished.

Dr Nath mentioned that Food security is built on three pillars:
  • Food availability: sufficient quantities of food available on a consistent basis.
  • Food access: having sufficient resources to obtain appropriate foods for a nutritious diet.
  • Food use: appropriate use based on knowledge of basic nutrition and care, as well as adequate water and sanitation.
According to him, Food security is a complex sustainable development issue, linked to health through malnutrition, but also to sustainable economic development, environment, and trade.

Dr. Nath concluded his talk by mentioning that a serious attempt by governments in articulating the policies and programmes in agriculture, food, nutrition, health security and employment and income generation will go a long way in overcoming insecurities. Growers should be encouraged and facilitated to augment production with efficient farming system and consumers should be educated on food, nutrition and health benefits. He also suggested greater consumption of fruits and vegetables and reduction of emphasis on consumption of foodgrains and felt that public awareness should be generated on this aspect.

The discussion and question answer session post talk was very informative and interesting.
